The Sky On Earth
Shirin Abedinirad is an internationally acclaimed Iranian contemporary conceptual artist, land artist, and assistant professor at Utah Valley University. Born in Tabriz, Iran, in 1986, she has captivated global audiences with her minimalist, site-specific mirror installations, performance art, and video projects. Her work merges the earth and the sky, fundamentally recontextualizing how humans interact with nature, history, and sacred geometries. From the remote deserts of Iran to prestigious global biennials, Abedinirad’s practice acts as a bridge between ancient Persian philosophy and cutting-edge 21st-century contemporary art.
The Architecture of Light: Mirror Installations and Land ArtAbedinirad is widely recognized for her pioneering use of mirrors as architectural and mystical devices. Drawing inspiration from the Tachara Palace in Persepolis—where polished black stones were first used to duplicate light and space—she treats reflection as a tool for spiritual expansion.
- Heaven on Earth (Italy, 2014): Installed on a concrete staircase in Treviso, this public project layered mirrors along the steps. It turned the physics of nature upside down by bringing the sky to the viewer's feet, mimicking a pool of pure light.
- Evocation & Narcissus (Iran, 2013): Placed within the vast expanses of Iran’s central desert, these projects embedded mirrors directly into shifting dunes. Evocation utilized mirrors to evoke the illusion of water in an arid environment, while Narcissus held upright mirrors to show the desert its own vast beauty.
- Babel Tower & Mirrored Ziggurat: Collaborating with interactive designers, she recontextualized historical architectural structures. These tiered, spinning, mirrored towers fractured and unified cityscapes and horizons, creating a continuous dialogue between the viewer and the planet.
Creative Evolution: From Fashion to PerformanceAbedinirad's journey into land art was forged through rigorous multidisciplinary exploration. Guided initially by a childhood passion for painting, she completed formal studies in graphic design and fashion design at Shariaty Technical College in Tehran. Her fascination with the conceptual intersection of clothing and the human body led her directly into performance and video art.Her early career included studying video art under legendary Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami and a prestigious scholarship at United Colors of Benetton's Fabrica Research Center in Italy. This period culminated in her authoring the Persian-language book, Fashion and Conceptual Art in the 21st Century.Beyond pure aesthetics, Abedinirad has used her body and image to challenge structures of censorship, gender boundaries, and cultural representation. Her acclaimed, long-evolving performance project, Alma, serves as a poignant, defiant act of reclaiming personal identity and autonomy in the face of forced erasure. Additionally, her artistic versatility was highlighted when she appeared as an actress in Ali Ahmadzadeh’s film Critical Zone, which took home the prestigious Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival.
Global Impact, Sustainability, and the Virtual FrontierAfter moving to the United States to complete her Master of Fine Arts (MFA) at Michigan State University, Abedinirad settled into a new creative chapter. Her recent endeavors expand the physical boundaries of land art into the digital and textile realms:
- Reflective Journey (Turkey / VR): Prompted by the devastating 2023 earthquake in Adiyaman, Turkey, Abedinirad salvaged three doors from the rubble and paired them with mirror panels to meditate on perspective, rupture, and resilience. For Art Dubai Digital, she evolved this into a virtual reality environment (Reflective Journey VR), creating a sustainable, permanent form of land art that leaves zero physical trace on the planet.
- Rooted Resonance (Utah): Bridging her native landscapes with her current home, this performance and installation project saw the artist mapping the shoreline of Utah Lake with red wool to invoke ecological healing and grounding.
Today, while creating and showcasing her work with major institutions like the House of Fine Art (HOFA) Gallery and GAZELL.iO, Abedinirad passes her knowledge to the next generation. As an assistant professor of sculpture at Utah Valley University Department of Art & Design, she actively instructs students in 3D design, new media, and sculpting practices, urging them to utilize art as a medium for compassion and global unity.
